(Before H. G. Seth Smith, Esq., R.M.) Drunk.—John Matthewß, an elderly man, 5s and costs.

Stabbing.— John Brown again appeared on a charge of maliciously wounding Joseph Welling, by stabbing him with a knifo on the 26th ult.—Sergeant White said he had received a message from Dr. Bond stating that Welling was un. Me to attend at Court,—Remanded until Friday. Temporary Insanity.—Richard Ytmng, of Papakurn, was remanded for seven day?. Close Quarters.—James Crawford was charged on summons with conveying nine pigs in a box insufficiently large on noard the s.s. Wuitaki from Mangapai to Auckland on tho 26th ult.—Mr Earl appeared for Captain Crawford, and pleaded not guilty.—Mr Brassey prosecuted on behalf of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and stated the case.—Charles Hopkins, master of the s.s. Lily, deposed that he placed a box of pigs at Mangapai On board tho Waitaki for Mr Thos. Sloane. Tlioy wero taken in by two of the crew. He handod tho shipping note to Mr Bonnor. Tho box was about four feet loDg. Could not say how many pigs were in the box.—To Mr Earl: Did not suppose that tho captain knew anything about the pigs; captains could not be expected to know the contents of boxes which came into their possession. Knew the erato contained pige, because they wero continually grunting.— James Scutt, draper, Victoria-street, deposed that his attention was called to the pigs in Mr Arthur'? auction mart. Witness described tho box, which he measured; 20 x -20, and 54 in length. Mr Redgate was standing by. The pigs were closely packed, and ono at tho bottom was dead.—William Kedgate, Inspector, also gave evidence as to the condition of the pigs. One pig was a corpse, and another died shortly afterwards. Ho had had largo experience in packing pigs in England. Tho box was scarcely large onough for four young pigs. —Mr Earl addressed the Court in defence. — Dismissed without costs.

EjKCTiKr, a Bailiff.—Alexander Angus was summoned on a charge of assaulting Timothy Howard by seizing him by the collar of his coat, at Papakura, on the 24th of Juno, and thrusting him out of doors into the public thoroughfare.—Defendant pleaded not guilty.—Mr James Russell, for complainant, said that he had bsen unable to find Howard this morning, and under the circumstances he would ask for a remand, .■ and should the prosecution fail ho would 9 guarantee tho expenses of the wit' I nosHes from Papakura.—Kemanded until to- | morrow. , j q| This was all the business.
