The hearing of the petition against the Pukokura licensing election commenced at tho R.M. Court to-day before Mr Northcroft, R.M. Mr Hay appeared in support of the potition, and Messrs Whitaker and Campbell in support of the candidates. As through an overnight tho electoral roll and voting papeis were not before the Court, the hearing was adjourned, on the application of Mr Hay, till Tuesday next. Tifamks, this day.—Tho ketch, Wild Duck, Captain Scott, sails to-morrow morning for her cruiso among tho islands. Dunkdin, thin day.—Margaret Weir, late of Oainaru, arrested for child abandonment at Uunedin on tho Gth inst, has just been married at Wellington.
At a mooting of tho Hoard of Education this afternoon, the Finance Committee recommended that tho sums of £1,000 and £500 in hand for tho special pcrposos of playgrounds nt Ponaonby and Wollesloy-streots respectively, should bo placed on fixod deposit with the Bank of New Zealand, and that stops bo takon to purchase a playground at Ponsonby without dolay. Tho r>> commendation of tho Grafton lU.i;J School Committeo for the removal of Mr Talbot, assistant-master, was Ihon brought up. Tho Chairman announced that tho ouildren had been sent as requested at tho last mooting of tho Board, and Mr Talbot had writton in his own defence in respect of tho several charges. Mr Talr bot's answer was lengthy, going minutely into tho several charges, and leaving them to tho consideration of tho Board. M r Luko moved, and it was carried, "That Mr Talbot's reply be sent to the School Committee and Mr Healey, tho Headmaster."
The City Council have received from tha Government a Bum of £525 for ratos, on Government property within the city. It 19 more than tho Government wanted to pay, but only half of what the Council originally demanded,
Last night tho temporanco cantata, "Th» Reacuo of Harry Gray," was porformed in tho Choral Hall by the Band of Hope Union choir. Mr D, (ioldie presided, and the connective readings wove given by Row T, Spurgeon. There ■was a large attondanco, and ft most sueoessful performanoo. The proceeds arc tv bo devoted to tho aid of tho Drum and Fife Band recently started.
Tho Dovonport Steam Ferry Company have received the epedial permission of Capt. Ariji, of the Japanose mau-of-war ship " Tsukuba," to run tho Victoria to and from that vessel on Sunday afternoon next, conyeying visitors at one shilling each return ticket.
Our Whangarei porresponpent writes that on tho 25th a house belonging to Mr Bayley, but opcupied by Mr Hart at Otaikn, was burnt down.. Lo»s, £100 ; uninsured.
The Cjty Council have decided to fpneo tho new Cemetery at Wnikomiti at a cost of £375. Its area is 03 acres, IS pf which have been allotted to tho Church of England denomination, 0 to tho Wesleyan, 9 to tho Roman Catholic, 5 eaph to tho Presbyterian Npn-(3onforroist pommimions, | acres to the .Tews, and 8 acres to the general public.
