Mining News.
Important Dihcovkey.—To-day's Thames " Advertiser " says : —"An event hcippened yesterday which can fairly take precedence in the matter sf importance, of anything which has marked tho history of theThami s goldfield for a course of years, if not, indeed, during its wholo career. We alludo to the di: c ivery of gnld at the 640-feet level of the Deep Lsvel Cross mine, a distance of twenty eight feet from the main drive, the leader was struck in tho back of the drive, it is about G inches in width, but owing toils flatness only a small quantity of quartz, nit more than a few hatfuls, could be broken down, tiold was, however, found in several pieces of tho stono taken out. The minerals with which the reef is impregnated are of a very kindly character, and the general texture of the stone is pleasing to miners, while the adjacent country is in every way favourable. •The point at which the gold has been found is not more than 20 feet from where tho J mder was seen in the rise. Tho baoks wil therefore be not very extensive, as tho leader in this vicinity overlaps into the Imperial ground at a height of about 50 feet. As tho drive progresses southward, tho height of ground increases rapidly at every foot, and as there is every likelihood of the same class of country continuing; the probabilit \pk of gold also lasting is very great. The inij.oi'tance of tho discovery cannot bo overrated. It most intimately affects both the Cross and Imperial Companies in the first instance, while its influence upon tho prosj pectsof the whole fieldmust beeonside able ■
