On Saturday at eight o'clock there was a lire in High street, by which wore destroyed the premises occupied by ?.l r Alfred Simpson, bookseller; Mr Church, draper; Mr Dolman, grocer; and Mr Smith, boot and shoemaker. The line new building of the Empire Hotel prevented the spread of tlio Humes in ono direction, the brick wall of l'elcrsen, jeweller, in the other. The heavy rain also assisted by extinguishing the large masses of burning material which fell on neighbouring roofs. The Fire Brigade worked hard for three hours. The damage is estimated at
about 110,000. Mr Dolman was uninsured The following aro said lo be the insurances
—Mr 11. -J. Hall, on premises, occupied by Messrs Church and Smith, £1,300; olliee not ascertained. Air Smith's stock is insured in tho London and Liverpool for 1500; Standard, 1500: Union, Jt'soo, of which £250 is reinsured, but it is not known in what oliico. Mr Church's stock is insured in tho New Zealand for £500; Mercantile Union, £'500; fixtures insured for £150; ollicc not known. Mr Simpson's building is insured for £500 in tho Imperial, £500 in" tho South British) 'dock, 11,000 in tho J'lmnix, £1,000 in Now Zealand, £1,000 in the Norwich Union, 1500 in tlie Guardian, £500 in the Norwich Union, £500 in the Loyal, £2."i0 in tho United, £500 in the Alcrcantilo Union ; the fittings insured for £100 ; ollicc not known.
i.atcr. Tho following arc additional or corrected insurances :—VV. J. Hall, buildings, LBOO in tlio Union Oliico, of which L 250 is re-insured in tho United, and L 225 in the Hamburg-Mngdebuig. Churches fixtures, LSO in the Australian Mercantile Union. The Victorian had LSOO over Simpson's (bookseller) slock in addition to the insurance already telegraphed, but the Australian Alcrcantilo had no risk over this stock of 1,1,000, for which it was insured in the Union. LSOO was reinsured ill London and Lancashire, and L 250 of the 1,100 held over the same stock by tho New Zealand was re-insured in the HamburgMagdeburg; The total of all the insurances i5L10,250.
