The weather, which had for somo time previously been fine, suddenly changed for the worse, and a heavy squall was followed by a dead calm. The schooner was driven ashore by a heavy swell setting in towards the island. The crew succeeded in getting ashore, but within four hours the vessel became a total wreck. At tho time of wreckage the Pirate had most of her Auckland cargo on board, whicli was plundered by the natives, but a largo quantity was afterwards returned through the efforts of the resident missionary. The hull of the schooner was sold by auction for 21d015., and the cargo for l,SOOdolf<. The hull was insured in the Union ollico for £1,000, £7(io of which is re-insured in tho South British.
