BRETT'S COLONIST'S GUIDE AND CYCLOPEDIA OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE.
Consul Griffin writes as follows with reference to this work. As a gentleman
of extensive literary acquirements and acquainted with the extensive and valuable library of practical works for which wo are indebted to the United States, his opinion
is noteworthy :—■
" The book is the most valuable work of tlie kind published in the colonies. I have read every chapter in it with attention and pleasure. The extent, variety, and accuracy of its information are extraordinary. It is what it claims to be, a Cyclopaedia of Universal Knowledge. The insight that it gives into the most approved methods of agriculture, the management of live stock, tho dairy— in fact, everything pertaining to farming operations—commend it to everyone interested in the prosperity of the colony. The editor has displayed most excellent tnste and judgment. All his ideas are eminently broad and practical. Tho arrangement of tho subject matter is simply admirable. lam especially pleasod with tho articles on rinery, flax, fruit, and hop culture. The abstract' of the local Government and land laws of this colony is the most succinct and intelligible that has come under my observation, whilst the printing, binding, and illustrations of tho work are superb."
