NOTES BY HIPPONA.

Since the appearance of the weights for the two principal events of tho Auckland Racing Club Summer Meeting, a deal of business has been transacted in the betting market. All of the pencillers have opened books on the double, Cup and Derby, and owing to the liberal prices offered, they have received a large amount of patronage. Up till yesterday Turquoise was the best favourite for the Cup, but owing to the steady support awarded Escopeta, she is at present a bettor favourite than anything else. Altogether the daughter of Musket has been backed for the Cup to win £900, while 1,000 to 30 has been accepted about her for tho Cup and Derby, and 100'e to 4 are eagerly inquired after and wanted. Turquoise has been befriended to win £1,300; Nelson, £1,000; Sir Bedevcre, £000 ; Musketeer, £800 ; Welcomo Jack, £S00; Libeller, £700; Salvage, £G00; Lconata, 1500; Tim Whiiller, £500, and Ilippodamia, £500. Very little has been done in the double—Cup and Steeplechase— but Turquoise, Welcome Jack, and Escopota, coupled with Clarence, Barbary, and Chandler, are the favourite picks. The following is a true state of the odds for tho AUCKLAND CUP. 100 to 12 agst Escopeta (tk and wtd) 100 to 12 Turquoise (off) 100 to 7 Welcome Jack (off) 100 to 6 Nelson (tk and off) 100 to 6 Salvage (tk and wtd) 100 to G Libeller (tk and off) 100 to 5 Sir Bedevere (tk) 100 to 5 Leonata (tk) 10 0 to 5 Tim Whiffler (tk) 100 to 5 to 100 to 2 the others Captain Russell's mare Leonora • was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club Summer Meeting on Wednesday last. This was not owing to dissatisfaction with her Cup impost, but on account of it being doubtful whether her "dickey leg" would stand another severe preparation. Since the daughter of Leolinus and Gossip has been withdrawn, her stable companion Escopeta, by Musket—Winifred has come into great favour for both the Cup and Derby, and for tho former event 100 to 14 is now the best price obtainable against her. The Takapuna Jockey Club Spring Meeting, which is to be held on Saturday next, promises to be unusually successful. The following general entries and acceptances were received last night:— St. Andrew's Handicap. One mile and a half. St. lb. stlb. Seeling RACE.-Flutter, Stray Shot, Bullfinch, Wanga. There has been but little betting on the meeting so far, but in what has been done, Yuba Bill has met with most aupport for tho St. Andrew's Handicap, while Chandler and Woodpecker are h«ld in most esteem for the Hurdles. Chandler is also greatly fancied for the Steeplechase. The action of the Auckland Racing Club in removing the disqualification from Messrs Robinson and Lance's trainer, R. Ray, will I think, meet with general approval, and it may be mentioned that it was done on account of an influentially.signed requisition that was presented to the Committee. It has been freely admitted in Australia that the Victoria Racing Club were unduly harsh with Ray, while others who perpetrated barefaced swindles, notably in Archie's case, were allowed to get off scot free. But for the ill-natured remarks of an erstwhile New Zealand turfite in the hearing of several V.R.C. officials, it is said that Ray would never had the stigma cast upon him. The Cambridge Jockey Club appear to have had a most successful little meeting on Wednesday last, for there was a good attendance and excellent sport. Fishwoman was thought a real good thing for.the Cup, but she had to go down before Rewi, who won that event and tho Stewards' Handicap also. He.was ridden and trained by T. Hodson, who I learn, had him in pretty §ood nick. Chandler aeoured both the teoplechase and Hurdles, having rather an easy victory in each. Tho dismissal of the well-known jookey, R. Derritt, from the Robinson-Lance stable, caused quite a sensation in Christchurch. It seems that on the morning previous to tho rape for the New Zealand Cup they told him that his services were required by them no longer, and on him asking the cause of so summary a dismissal, they refused to give any reason, but admitted he had always ridden for them to their extreme satisfaction, A number of rumours got about concerning the matter, one of which was that Nonsense and Cheviot had a private trial over the Cup distance at three o'clock in tho morning, of which the former had all the best at tho finish, and it was thereupon resolved to send her for the money. During the day a commission was issued to back her at tho od,da of the previous day, but it w^s. found that the owners hod beon forestalled. A private detective was thereupon employed to ascertain who had taken up the money, and in tho evening it was reported that Derr}tt had forestalled thorn. This he publicly denies, and in order to clear himself from the imputation, he asked the Canterbury Jockey Club at a committee meeting on Monday night last to investigate the affair, but they decided that the matter was not within their jurisdiction, and that therefore they could not interfere.
