Andante and Minuet, and Trio, from the "Surprlzo" Symphony Haydn Thia Bymphony was composed (or the audionco at Vionna, and derives its namo from tho following circumstance: — Haydn was frequently annoyed by his audience becoming inattentive, and even falling asleep, during the slow movements of his symphonies, where he introduced his most melodious and beautiful ideas, but which the audienco (then, as now) did not appreciate so well as tho more dashing and noisy movements. So he thoughtho would, at any rate, disturb tho serenity of tho slumberore, and, to this end, after a few bars of a soothing nature, introduced, onono note, an unexpectcd/oWissi'mo crash by the whole strength of the orchestra, and, having aroused the attention of his audience, proceeded with his soft and flowing "Andante." This symphony has long been an established favourite. Haydn's first work of magnitude was a Mass, which ho composed at the early ago of ton. Although ho composed slowly and carefully, |his works are oxcecdingly" numerous, comprising 118 symphonies, 83 quartette!, 24 trios, 19 operas, S oraorios, 15 masses U sonatas, M songs and other vocal pieces, the harmony and accompaniment to 36fi old Scottish songs, besides a prodigious number of pieces for various instruments. He was a great friend of Liszt, Hiller, and Bellini, and when at the point of death, begged that he might be buried in the cemetery of Pore la Chaise, Paris, near the grave of Bellini, whom te hod so well known and loved. " Chopin's compositions are in high estcom among musicians . . . pervaded by a sonsitive, restless, and highly poetic fanoy, and abounding in subtle ideas, graceful and original harmonic effects, and rich instrumentation." The Marche Funebre was originally wrltton for tie piano, but, unlike many pianoforte eomposltions, i» capable of efleotlve arrangement lor the orchestra. 6. INTERVAL. &, Overture, "JFigaro" , Mozart ORCHESTRAL BAND. The opera of " Le Nozze de Figar* H was completed in the year 1786 by Mozart, at Vienna. The plot is, like those of most of Mozart'B operas, weak and somewhat tedious, but the music la so marvellously fresh, spontaneous, and sparkling in its flow that this work will alwaya remain a favourite with those who enjoy good 1 operatic mnsic " Figaro" was received at Prague with cTen more enthusiasm than it OToked at Vienna. Mozart was so delighted with ita reception at Prague that he wrote another opera, the now famous 'Don Giovanni," especially for his Prague friends. Mozart was a wonderful instance of early development of genius. Atthoagoof four he played the clarlchord, and composed many minuets and other pieces, still extant. When only six years of age ho astonished tiio audienco at Munich and Vienna by his wonderful portorinaaccs on the clarichord. 9. Duet, (from the Opera of "Faust," with Orcheitral Accom.).. .. This Is one of the most enjoyable of Haydn's 83 Quartettes. The Minuet is a Canon of quaint character between tho Ist and 2nd violins In octaves, and tho viola and 'cello in octaves. It is preceded by a few bars of "Andante," and is followed by a sparkling " Presto." 11. Canzonetta," My Mother Bids Mo ' Bind My Hair" (with String Quintette Accompaniment) .. Haydn MRS JUDSON. 12. Song, "The Border Bride" .. Boeckel IIX A. H. STUART. 13. Wedding; March ("Midsnnuner Night's Dream") .. .. Mendelssohn ORCHESTRAL BAND. The music to the " Midsummer Night's Dreamt was composed by Mendelssohn at Berlin. His stay at this city wag to the great composer the most troublesome and harrassing during his life. It was at the urgent entreaty of the King that ho went to reside there, as the head of the new Musical Academy. But disagreements aroso, and he did not long take an active part in the management. The King was, however, very anxious to retain his services, and to secure this a special position seems to have been created for him, the duties of which were to compose music for any dramatic work which the King ■ took it into his head to have so embsllished. And though it is to this that we owe the ifoble "Antigone," "Athalie," "Midsummer Night's Dream," and other compositions, this work of dictation was very worrying to Mendelssohn, and in the year 1841 he resigned his position and returned to Leipzig, where he loved to live.
