BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The weekly meeting took place this afternoon, there being present: — Messrs Laishley (Chairman), Goldie, Buckland, Luke. Chairman's Report.—This report stated inter alia: (1) That Mr Boler had been sent to Bereaf ord-street temporarily, and that Miss M. J. Albely, from Greerton, had been sent temporarily to Ponsonby School ; (2) that attention of Newton Committee had been called to cleaning of East and West Schools ; (3) that leave of absence had been granted Mr Worthington, Wellesley-street,' till end of menth, on account of illness '■ (4) that exemptions iv respect of the Traiuing Classes had been granted to Miss Jen-am (Wellesley-street School), Mrs Simpson (Ponsonby), and Miss Kate Colebrook (Newmarket) ; (5) that the Michaelmas holidays had been advertised to take place during the last week in September. Alleged Inebriety ok a'_ Teacher.— Re the charges preferred against Mr Brown (seconel assistant master in Wellesley-.streot school), by Mr Worthington, Heatl-master, tho Committco reported that, after taking "such evidence as was deemed sufficient, it was of opinion "that Mr Worthingten was fully justified in desiring the removal of' Mr Brown," and they therefore requosted the Board to remove Mr Brown. It recommended the Boarel to placo Mr Brown at some other school. In reply to this the Secretary had wrttteu asking whether the statement "that Mr Worthington was fully justified in desiring the removal of Mr Brown," was to bo interpreted to mean "that all or any of the specific charges laitl by the Head-master against Mr Brown wore deemed to be proved to the satisfaction of tho Committee." A further letter from the Committee stated that Mr Brown had acknowledged that on Tuesday evening, in company with some friends, he drank more than he ocjjht, whoroupon Mr Worthineton had withdrawn othor charges. It then proceeded : "The Committco considor that Mr Brown wns suffering from the ef—ots of liquor taken tho night previously, that such, together with the certainly unbecoming conduct of some of tbo boys, so irritated him that he was not master of his words or actions, and during that time said or did certain things that havo served to dissover tho bond of confidence between himself and the head-master. Therefore his removal is recommended."—The Chairman stated that Mr Brown hod boon sent to Wellesley-street School from Ponsonby, because of current suspicions of' drinking habits, and that the Insdeetor at the time told him of this reason, and warned him not to afforel cause of verifying ihcni. —Mr Goldie seid that ho understood Mr Brown was a total abstainer 1 until ho was sent to Ohaupo, whore he had to lodgo at a public house. This, perhaps, was not the only instance of teachers falling under the curso of intem_>oraiice under such circumstances. Tho Board should pay greater attention to tho housing of thoir teachers.— It was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, "That tho Board having read the ohargos in this case, anil also tho reports of tho Committee, aro satisfied that Mr Brown has been guilty of gross misbehaviour, and therefore dismiss him from the employment c f tho Board, and tbat Mr Brown be paid his salary up to 31st August last." Girls' High School. —It was resolveto re-lease for a term of three years, at a rental of £300 per annum, tho building at present used for tlie purposes of tho Girls' High School.
