THE ACCIDENT TO THE ROTOMAHANA.
Inquiry 10-aay.
IB* TKLEOEAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
DUNEDIN, this day. THB Rotomahana Inquiry commenced today, Messrs Carew, Thompson, and Scott, assessors. Captain Carey, in evidence, said that the charts shewed that the flood stream let to the eastward, but in his experience it w»s much influenced by the wind. Had there been a light on Waipapa Point, the mishap could not have happened. He could only account for it by there being some unusually strong 'current. On arrival at the Bluff he found that for three days before there had been a northerly gale expected. Picked up the Dog Island light before four o'clock, and found the ship more to the south. From there ahe must have set three miles out of her course. In hi* opinion the accident was due to the vessel being set off her courte by the current. He had no reason to believe that th* chart was incorrect, although it is said there are rocks outtidc thine shown on the chart.
