! The ordinary weekly meeting of the City Council was hold last evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (J, M. Clark, Hsq.) in the chuir, Councillor Stevenson, Boardman, Phillipps, Devoro, Crowthor, Wadde), Thompson, Aickin, Dacre, Montague, Harper, Fleminy, Bell, Burns, Gatrett, George, Ma&efi.ld; and Mackechnie. UeainAOß.—William Felton wote objecting to ■ the proposed main sew* r going through his property in M.irnjiou-street, between Upper Queen and Symoids- -trcetp. ho added that He would not object to it goin? iut:> the original water-course. —The Engineer reported that there win lniking in the objection, and reconim nled tha Council to adopt the course as recomminded.—The objection was not entoitailed. Strayed Uattle.—Noah Woo,) wrote stating that the expense t) which hi< brother and binnelf Lad bean put through the straying of their cittle owing to the negligence o£ the Council's servants amounted to £915a, iudcpenilcut of the inconvotiiencc to which the> bad been put. COLLINCSWOOD stbeet. — Letter from ; James lieron, stating his intention to erect a retaining wall in front ot lua property in Uolliugvvood-streot, and 'asking for the removal of a bauk of earth. —It was agreed that the work bo done as requested. Reserve. — From the Crown lands Cilice, Wellington, Btating that the Government would be prepared to insert a clause ia any special powers and contracts bill that may bo introduced during the session for the purpose of vestiug the threc-nnd-a half acres of the Lunatic Asylum reserve at Point Chevalier in the City Council, if the Council would advertise tbe intention of dealing with the reserve, as required.—Agreed to advottise as required, and prepare the necessary clause. Hepaihs.—Letter from J. C. Pelham, applying for permission to repair and make alterations to a dwelling-homo iv Alb rtstreet, next to Superintendent Hughes'*. — Mr lsllis pointed out that the Building i Regulations would bo iufringed by the proposed repair?, and it was agreed that the ■ regulations bo adhered to. Dust Cart.—Letter from F. Smith and other residents of Little Queen-street, asking that the dust-cart should be sent through that thoroughfare periodically.— Referred to the Streets Committee. Contract. — From Thomas Kelly, stntiog that the Alexandra-street contract had beeu completed, and asking to ba furnished with particulars of claims that had been sent into the Council on that account. —Referred to tbe Finance Committee. Beach Koad.—Letter from tho Harbour Board, offering to hand over to the City Council the piece of land south of Beach Road (portion of which is referted to in Mr Fenton'g letter), for the pu'posa of widening Beach Koad and effecting other neces.
sary improvements. —On the motion of tho Mayor, the ctt'er was accepted, and the matter was referred to the Streets Committee for their report. MAIN Sewer.— Letter from the Harbour Board stating that at a meeting of that body it was agreed:—" That the But accumulated at the mouth of the sewer be removed ; that the beach at the mouth of tho sower be excavated to the rock in order to retain the silt when discharged from tha sewer; the coat of tbeae works be borne by tho City Council; and that the attention ot the Council be drawn to the urgent necessity for taking measures to proved the scwag* of the city from bciug discharged into the harbour,"—Hia Worship said ho would be sorry to accept any responsibility for tho silt at the pljca where the storm-water flowed out. It wsa not from tho main sewer. Regarding tho other matter, ho would ask the Harbour Uoard where tho sewago was to go. He moved that tho Council decline to accept the responsibility until it knows the character of the bank of silt referred t».

London-street.—The residents of Lon-Jon-Hlrcoh, Vonsnnby, through Cr Boardman, presented a pelitiou pointing out the bad state of the footpath? and cluumls, and asking that the necessary repairs be made -Received and referred to the Streets Committee.

-11 that the Committee understand that the Council have no power to compel the companies to contribute to the extinction of lirt-s, and therefore, at present, recommend them to accept the position,"—Recommendation adopted, Dkaininq into Westers Park.—The Legal Committee rocoinmcnd thut as a number of properties are draining into Western Park, tho Sanitary Inspector be instructed to take necessary steps to have the same removed.—The recommendation was adopted. iJKAiNAGB op Parselli,— The Le»al Committee recommended that a reply be sent to U idon Sash and Door Company, that as the sewage from Parntll falls into A tidal creek, it will be iv the province of the Harbour Board to deal with the matter, and recommended that a notice he sent to the Parnell Borough Council, to the effect of tho Surveyors memo, viz.—The Parnell Council should be made aware that if the City Council allow them draiobge in the creek, they will have to bear their share of cost in conveying it through the culvert tn the sea when that is required to be done :— The recommendation of the committee was adopted. Legal Committee. — This committee also recommended: (1) That the librarian bo authorised to shelve the books in the best possible order; (2) that a lamp be erected at south side of gate in Victoriastreet East; (3) that the committee be authorised to take men no lorjger required in a lbert Park for a short time to complete work in the Western Park.—The report was adopted. sstrkeTS (Jommittke. —This Committee recommended (1) Lotter from, J. Frosser re footpath south side of Karangahapa Road. Xhat reply be sent that paths will be shortly reduced to permanent level, and that temporary repairs be made. — i2) Letter ironi J. M. Alexander, on behalf of J. Lylo and petition residents of Wellington - street, re objection to work being done.—Kcieried to the Legal Committee on tho question of liability. - (3) Letter from J. Davey, re lamps in Vic-toria-street and Waterloo Quadrant. That a lamp lie placed in terras of surveyor's report, viz., about William-street, in Victoria Quadrant,—(4) Report from W, Ewington, re streets wherein mains have not been laid. That waterworks engiueer proceed with laying mains in tl c streetsmoitioned, where practicable and most nseded, balance beingleft till next spring. Committee suggest that all instruction should go through the " Superintendent" Engineer as to the employment of any additional labour required.—(s) Report re bu lding surveyor re public buildings : That in all cases where doors of public buildings open inwardly (instructions be given to have thesame open outwards befort next license is issued. (G) Letter from JJ. Fin'ay and others, also motion, No. 748 (i.e.), Stanley-street; that Engiueei's report be adopted, viz, that a footpath along the east side of Stanley-street, wi'h water channel out out, be made between the Strand and the Fibre Company's works at a coat of £50; also, two new lamps be erected, one at Bowliag Green, and at entrance of Domain, and one a little to the south of junct on of Alton Road. Your Committee recommend that open drain be cleaned ot stnues, &c— (7) Street Lamps: That the Engineer be instructed to havo all street lamps (the light from which is rendered useless by tho erection of verandahs and trees adjacent) eithor removed a thort distance or lowered, as may be deemed best.—Cr Boardman added verbally that the drain in Stanleystreet did not appear to be very offensive.— Cr Aickin remarked that *tais was very astonishing, considering the number of complaints they had received about that drain. The committee must havo visited tho spot when the drainage from the hospital was n"t comiog down in any strength— The report was adopted with the alteration of the words, "Superintendn<» Engineer " to Waterworks Engineer, STREET LEVELS AND TRAMWAYS. Montague moved, " That tenders be called for forming and metalling Syrnonds-street, from Weilesley-stre.it East to corner of Karangahape Koad." Kerbstones. — Tenders were received for supply of kerbstones as follow: -Elias Andrews, £99 (accopted); H. Smith, £129; Drum, £109 10a.— The Engineer's estimate was £100. Lamp-posts! —Tenders for 50 lamp-posts W.-ro received: Paul and Schenck, £213 10s (accep-ed); C. Hawkeswood, £223 15s.
