Jobn McDowell's houae at Katura Valley, 6_ miles from Havelock, was burnt to ihe ground at 4 o'clock this morning. The fire was occasioned by the bursting of a kerosene (lamp. The children were rescued. The furniture was all burnt. Assistance was at band. The building alone^was insured for £150.

Captain William Sallow, the owner and captain of the well-known trading schooner 3~ue.y Kate, died rather suddenly last night—it ia supposed from heart disease.
WANGANUI, Tnursday. A TRAP SHATTERED WHILE CROSSING THE RaILWaY.
A railway engine caught a trap, containing a man named Gonroy and a boy named Wright, whilst going over the level crossing. Bo.h were seriously injured, and there is no hope of recovery. It is stated that the driver did not sound the whistle.
