ALARM OF FIRE.
Considerable excitement was caused in Queen-street early on Saturday'evening by an alarm of fire from the city bells. Smoke • could be seen issuing from the npataira Vwindows of Mr Steadman's seed store, adjoining the Union Bank, and thither (the 1 crowd directed their steps. Superintendent Hughes and the Fire Brigade were soon in attendance, and haying effected an en> trance, proceeded upstairs, where they ■ found that the outbreak had taksn place amongst a quantity of shavings left by carpenters who had been making some alter* m tions in the premises. They were covered I with bags of grass seed, and some difficnlty I was experienced in getting at the seat of the . fire. The flames were eventually ex- ■ tinguished with a few buckets of watw, 1 but Hot before two holes had been burnt in fl? the ceiling, and damage done to the gwsv seed ; Captain Butler and the members of the Salvage Corps prevented any injury to the stock underneath by spreading tarpaulins over it.
