Accident to Sir George Grey.
Sir George Grey is all right again, but had a narrow eEcape a week ago coming from the railway Btation. It was dark, and he crossed the road where an ordinary cow gralins; was fixed. His foot canght in it, and he fell heavily, but escaped, fortunately, with a severe shaking and a bruised face.
Want-oj'-Confidence Motion not
Probable.
I don't think -anything to the contrary notwithstanding—that a vote of waut-of-confidence will be tabled. Hitherto it could not have been bronght down because there was no certainty how come half-dozen ruoa would vote, and this doubt is not yet settled, notwithstanding aught said to the contrary, and should a vote be tabled you will understand that these doubts have been removed. The difficulty of the Government is to prevent the party decom. posing, and the Opposition would rather wait, and see the decomposition complete, than adopt any other course.
The Vote for the North.
Ke the Public Works vote, I find that the statement in the WTAR of the 13th, that Messrs Hobbs and Hurst suggested about £50,000 as what might be deemed fair for North Auckland, is uutme. Messrs Mitshelson, Hurst, and Hobbs asked for £250,000. Mr Dargaville, as a city member, bad nothing to do with-it.
Kaivalcawa Miners Volunteer.
Tho miners at tbe Kawakawa coal mines, to the number of about sixty, have, through the district member (Mr Hobbs), offered their services as a volunteer force in view of the existing war scare. Tho Defence Minister 1b considering the offer.
Atickland Topics,
Mr Hurst is urging on the Government the desirability of subsidising a steam service between Auckland and the islands of Samoa and Tonga.
Mr Harris has presented a petition from Mr T. L. Wallis, askings that children born in the colony may have the same privileges in the master of land grants as immigrants. Mr Codman presented ape« tition from George Kayner for aland grant. Mr Sheelia.ni has been appointed Ctuiir. man by the Naval Training Vessels Committee. Capt. Fairchild and other witnesses will be examined.
Motions by Mr. Stevens.
Mr Stevens has given notice to ask the Native Minister to-morrow—l. Whether the Government are under an agreement to lease to Meiisrs Studholme, Moorhousc, and Go., or to any other firm or person, the whole or any portion of a block of 300,000 acred of land, known as the. Murimotu block, at the yearly rental of £10 per 1000 acres ? .2. If such be the case, under what Act or authority are the Government empowered so to deal with the public estate? 3. If the said block of land is not under negotiation by the Government, as per Gazette notice of tbe 24th January, 1878, tor public works purposes ?
Debate on the Land Bill. The whole of yesterday evening s sitting was occupied with the adjourned debate on the Land Bill. The only Auckland mem.-, ber who spoke was Mr Hobbs, who said he had expected to see a few more liberal measures brought down than at present. He referred members to the Homestead Act ofthe provincial district of Auckland, 'and looked upon it as a much fairer Bill. The land question, he said, was the allimportant one of the day. Mr Sheehan informed Mr Hobbs that there was no such Act as he referred to. Mr Hobbs continued, and said it made little difference, as there was some such Act, He firmly believed that if the present measure was carried it would not attract population to the colony, but hoped at the same time the Bil! would be read a second time. Mr Rollealon then uiqvcd that the debate be adjourned, which was carried.
