PAINFUL STABBING CASE.

T. J. Ryan, a book agent, was charged to-day with stabbing his wife. It appears they had a drunken quarrel, in which Mrs Ryan got knocked about and stabbed in the arm. She did not appear to give evidence, and was sent for, but was intoxicated when sho arrived, and could givo no evidence. Ryan's defence was that he tried to take the knife from his wife, and supposed that in doing so he inflicted the wound. Under the circumstances the Bench dismissed the case, with a warning to Ryan. Mr John GrigK has been elected chairman of the Frozen Meat Company. The New Zealand Shipping Company have replied to their application for the Mataura, that abo has been placed at tho disposal of the Dunedin Company, whom they had considered had a prior claim. It was decided to order A. Haslam's dry refrigerating apparatus at once, and advertise for sites for the company's works.

James Diamond, ono of the Arawata firemen, fell off the Port wharf early this morning, nud was drowned. He leaves a wife and two children in Glasgow.
