MAY QUEEN REPORTED ASHORE.
A. hki'oht was circulated in town this morning, stating that tho May Queen hucl gone. ashore at Tauranga. This naturally created v soDßa'lon, as the May Queen was known to have a largo number of passengers on board. Further information was therefore anxiotißly looked for. The following telegrams have been received from our correspondent. TAURANGA, this day. Tbo May Queen arrived yesterday from London : all well. Whilst rounding the beacon the dropped anchor, but tho cablo parted, and tho ship was stcored into Blind Channel, and will bo Drought to her anchorage to-day. A lator telegram was to the following effect :— Tauhah r.A, this day, noon. The May Queen is not ashore. When roundlnic UtOooy Point sho dropped anchor; tho cablo parted, and the pilot ateurod tho ship into Blind Channel, whoro Bho now lies. The Staffa will tow her to her anchorage The May Queen just touches at tho stern at dead low water.
The arrival of the lona was tho algnal for a rush down the wharf, and a largo crowd awaited her coming alongside. Captain Taylor immediately informed inquirers that tho May Queen was not In any danger, which served to mtiafy the curious and lull tho anxiety of those mora Interested. Captain Taylor informs us that tho May Queeu was ofFCarr&way Island at daylight yestorday, making for Tauranpa. Ho wont alongside with tha lona, and spoke her. "All well." 'l'he Bhip took a pilot oa board nbout two miles ontsldo tho Bluff, and rounded Stonoy Point with all Bail sot. Shortly after sho was observed to bo la danger of groutidldg and both anchors were let go, and as speedily the chains parted. The May Quean drifted on to the North Hank at 2 p.m. The lona olTorod to render any as-sißtanco ia tho way of towing, bet such was not aooepted. Captain Colvlllo deciding to land tho passenKorr.lighten the ship, and then heave her oil. 'Ihe sinfla, was employed for this duty and it was expected that tho ship could bo got off at high water. When tho lona loft at G o'clock last night tho May Quoen was high and diy on tho Band. Captain McGregor received a note to the following etfoct i " May Quoen ran aground in Blind Channel at the top of high water, ineido tho Heads after parting with both anchors." Tho vessel Is considered qalte safe as evidenced by tho following tolograru reccivsd by the South UriiishOffice:—La'er: "May Queen all right; no damage to ship or cargo."
