Voltunteer Intelligence.

The tiring for the District Champion Belt presented by Oaptaia J. M. Clark took place at the Mount Eden Rifle Range at 1 o'clock p.m. on Saturday night, under the superintendence of Captain Mahon (Victoria Company), when 36 competitors, representing the various corps, put in an appearance. The -weather was fine, but hazy, with a light north-west variable wind, thus renderin" the sighting at long distances very uncertain. This much-coveted trophy fell to the lot of Major Morrow, after a very koen and exciting competition. On the declaration of the result of the firing by the officer commanding, three cheers were given for the champion, who acknowledged the compliment in stiitable terms, at the same timestatin" that he attributed his success wholly to the fact of his being one of the possessois of the new rifles recently issued by the Government, as had it not been for •that, he had quite made up his mind not to waste any more time in practising -with the worthless weapons previously lissuod. We may state that the new rifles alluded to are ot a similar pattern to those •used during the Government prize-firing at Hokitika, and it will be remembered that the two highest scores in the All Comers match, when 74 competed on that occasion, were made by rifles of this kind, boatingseveral regulation small hose—Whitworth, Meetford, Ingram, &c.-match rifles. Sufficient time has not elapsed since the issue of these weapons to the various Companie3 to give fair opportunity of testing their good qualities, but the mecibcrs are so far highly pleased with them, and the Government have certainly advanced a step in the right direction in having caused them to be issued, as it will certainly tend to foster the Volunteer movement. Subjoined are the scores:— lliSI Skinner 2*322 20033 33322 32233 22033-5o Hendereon V. 33333 20030 234 M 33222 0.2J2-55 6 W Leluh 23353 02222 32222 21410 32000-o3 StOTlinK :: 32234 20232 30413 30303 £0203-51 J.H.
