GARRARD BEFORE THE COURT.
Considerable curiosity was excited this morning outside the Police Court by the appearance of Mr Garrord and a company of the unemployed. Mr Garrarrd scenic to have easy command, and marsshalled them in respectable ordder. But a feeling ot disappointment found a ready exponent in the friend of the oppressed. He had promised Mr Brophey, of the Immigration Barracks, that lie aud the unemployed would meet him precisely at ten o'clock at the Police Court, iv order that Mr Brophy might review the Garrard Troop, with the view of formiug his own opinion as to their physical capabilities. As Mr Brophy had not put iv appearance at the close of the Polico Court business, Mr Garrard walked into Court, aud informed Mr Barstow of the non-fulfilment of tho promise made by Mr Brophy. As booii as there was a chance of speaking, Mr Barstow spoke of the changes aud ups and downs of colonial life of bis time, but be never knew of times like tho present, when there was such a cry about unemployed, and provisions so cheap, and yet the farmers are unable to get men to mow their grass. Work was plentiful, but wages demanded were higher than farmers could pay. He believed it was almost impossible for farmers to pay men at the rate ot £2 a week, and live ; he was au advocate for a fair day's wages for a fair days, work, hut farmers could not pay 6s or 7s a day. Garrard attempted a reply, but talked so long and with such rapidity that he could not follow his argument against tbe state of things, law, and Government.
