INVERCARGILL, this day. A DETACHMENT of the Southland Hussars were proceeding from Windham to Matura when some larrikins laid a train of powder across tho road, and firod it with tho object of clearing the riders out of tho pigskins. Tho attempt proved unsuccessful, The men however dismounted and led their horses a little further on and found a rope stretched across tho road on a post_ of sufficient height to catch the riders. Being apprehensive of further mischief, they remounted and wheeled amid a shower of stones, making their way to Matura round about the road.
