The Falck Laws, BERLIN.

A Committee of the Lower House in the German Parliament has rejected a Bill which was introduced by the Government for the mitigation of the Falck or May Laws, and iv the direction of providing large concessions to the Catholics in Germany. The English Income Tax.

The increase which the Chaucelloi of the Exchequer proposes to make on the Income Tax will be a penny, not twopence as was at first understood.

Capture of Arica, VALPARAISO.

June 11. The Chiliaus have captured the Peruvian seaport of Arica. [Arica is the principal seaport town of Southern Peru, iv 18° 2SV S.-70" 10 v W. Population estimated at 5,000 (1871). Its roadstead is much frequented. The foreign merchants reside chiefly at Tacna, 30 miles north by railway. It is connected with Iquiquc by a submarine telegraphic cable. Arica is a village built on a Jlat close to the sea-shore, having a high promontory to the south, which protects the roadstead. The climate is salubrious and cool for this tropical latitude, ranging from SG' J iv summer to 5G° in winter; the distiict is subject to frequent shocks, and was devastated by the great earthquake of 18G8. The customhouse and lauding-place have since been rebuilt. Chief exports are copper ore, wool, and silver, cinchona, and chinchilla skim. Value ot goods exported iv 1873, £545,207 ; of bullion, £SGO,GOS. Value of imports, £200,677. Thirty-five sailingand 187 steam vessels entered the port in 1872. Arica was sacked by Sir Francis Drake in 1579].

Mr, Gladstone's Budget LONDON.

June 10.

Mr Gladstone, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, proposed to reduce the import duty on wines, and to replace the malt duty by a tax on beer. He further proposes to increase the cost of the spirit licenses, aud to increase the income tax by two pence. These changes will show a surplus of £350,000.

The Australian Cricketers commenced a match to-day agaiust eleven of Yorkshire County, at Dewsbury. The ground was not in'good order. The Home Team went iv first, and the innings closed for 55. SpoHbrth aud Palmer each took 5 wickets. The Australians then went in, but only succeeded in scoring 65. The Yorkshiremen commenced their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had scored 51 runs, with the loss of only 1 wicket.
