By lccent gazette published at Wellington, Mr T. Wells, of Cambridge, nas been added to the list of Justices of Peace for the colony. Mr Wells is highly respected iv the Waikato, aud well worthy of the honour done him.

Ou Monday the now line of omnibuses starts from the Auckland Hotel to Kybcr Pass via Symonds-street, from a quarter past eight in the morning till a quarter past seven iv the evcuing.

We notice that the standing committee of the Home Mission Faod invite the clergy and congregations of the churches in the Auckland Idoccse to assist as much as possible in supporting this excellent mistion, ou Sunday the 20th iust. This fund is established for the purpose of supporting ministers in the work of carryiug tho Gospel and spreading the light of Christianity iv districts where such provisions have not been made. We uuderstaud that tills fund is not sufficient for effectually doing the work. It is hoped therefore that the sympathies of members of the Anglican churches will bo moved to practical cil'ort iv this eminently Christian mission.

The public meeting of ratepayers convened on requisition for the discussion of the Property Tax, as well as to consider the advisability of levying a Laud aud an Income Tax, has been adjourned till Monday night, in tho Lome-street Hall. The reason given is the insufficiency of the attendance at the meeting last evening. The Lorncstreet Hall was not half full. After a short delay Mr D. H. McKcnzie was voted to tho chair upou the proposition of Mr Crowther. Ho initiated the proceedings by reading the advertisement convening tho meeting, after which he read a note from his Worship the Mayor apologising for his unavoidable absence. Mr J. M. Shorn, expressed his fear that the meeting had not been sufficiently advertised and conscqueutly he begged leave to move its adjournment till Monday night at eight o'clock. Mr J. Iloldship in seconding tho motion said tho meeting had been convened too hurriedly. Tho notification had only appeared in that day's papers aud he therefore presumed that very many of the ratepayers had not seen it iv time. Mr Dargaville al-o spoke in favour of the adjournment. He suggested moreover, that the words "of latepayer." should be omitted from the advertise-lent calling the meeting, as there should be no class limitation on the matter. All were interested, and what was required was simply a meeting of the public. The suggestion having been approved, the motion for adjournment was put to the meeting and carried. The assemblage then dispersed.

A poor woman named Ellen Burns was locked up last night on a charge of drunkenness, but at midnight,Qon Sergeant Fleming going into the cell, the unfortunate woman was moaning, evidently iv great pain. The sergeant wished to know what he could do for her, when she replied "doctor, doctor," in rather unintelligible terms. As_ she seemed to grow worse the sergeant, a single man, communicated with Sub-Tnspcctor Pardy, who discovered that Mrs Burns was taken in labour. A conveyance was immediately procured ami the woman sent home. Within au hour Ellen Burns presented to her husband a son-.

Our Whangaroa correspondent writes, under date the 10th iust. : " This morning Aye had a heavy fall of raiu, which has caused a fresh in the river, aud a great quantity of logs are coming down. The boats are at present bus/ rafting them to the different booms. Ths conduct of the Custom House oflicer in the case of the schooner Ephemy has been reported to head-quarters for au inquiry."

A new limited liability Gold Mining Company, the " Success," was formed in Mr Ranuerson's office yesterday afternoon. The mine is situated at Coromandel, near the Argyle claim, and the first trial crashinc gave a return of 42ozs Sdwts of gold, from 19 tons of quartz. Nine shareholders took an area of live acres. The success of the first operation induced the shareholders to form a limited company with a capital stock of 11,000 shares of the nominal value of .CI per share, 2s of which is to be considered paid up. Messrs John Klrkwood, John Fisher, A. Stewart, James McGregor, and Charles Wells, were appointed dircctois of the "Success." Mi- Haudersou was appointed legal manager. The "European Mail" says:—" Our friends Messrs. Baker aud Farron are fas', becoming as great favourites in London as they were in the colonies. They have established themselves at the Duke's where they are much appreciated, aud draw capital houses in " Conrad and Lizette."

The famous Scotch breeder, Mr David Biddell, of Blackball, Paisley, has sold two of his celebrated stallions, viz., "LucksAll " aud " Chancellor," at a very high figure, to Thomas Wilkin, Tindal Downs, Dumfries, for exportation to his brother, Itobcrt Wilkin, of Chrisleluuch, New Zealand. " Lucks-All," has wou nearly £G'CO in premiums, being the champion horse at the Highland Society's Show at Perth last season. He is by that well-known horse "Prince ot Wales." Tho "Chancellor" has also been a very fortunate horse. When three years old he was engaged at the Glasgow Show to serve mares belonging to the Duke of Bedford's tenantry at Woburn at £400 for the season, and last year he was selected at Glasgow by Ihc Dumfries Horse Association for the district, with £100 premium. He is by the noted horse " Time o' Day.

Mr, it. A. Proctor, the astronomer, gave his first lecture at the Melbourne Atlieiiajum, which was crowded to excess. The lecture was of the most interesting do*cription, and was listened to with the profoiiiidjst attention.

In the Supreme Courts Melbourne, an action of Kosenthal v. the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand was tried before Mr. Justice Barry and a jury of six. Plaintiffs claimed damages for loss by detention of a package of jewellery shipped forHobartTown in the steamer Kingarooma, but carried by some mistake to New Zoaland. The defence was that it was the plaintiffs fault; that the goods were taken on as the packages were not properly marked. The jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff, damages, £159 ss.

The monthly inspection parade of the Auckland Rille Battalion will take place in the Drill Shed ou Tuesday next, the 15th instant, at half-past seven o'clock. A full attendance is requested, as an alteration in capitation year has taken place. Members desirous of qualifying should not miss any of the parades this year.

An exceptionally lino simple of imported potatoes is at present lying for salo at the bonded stores of Messrs. Hull liros. Albertstreet. It comprises several varieties, of which the principal arc :—Cambridgo Kidney, Biesses' Early, and Ashting Kiduey. They arc peculiar for prolific yields, early maturity, unequalled quality, aud clean

The case of Joseph Worms, hawker, which occupied the time of the Police Court, until live o'clock last evening, resulted in a committal for trial on three charges of forging, falsifying, aud uttering receipts with intent to defraud. Tho chaiges were clearly brought home to the prisoner, after a very careful investigation and unshaken evidence. The facts of the case are pretty well known to readers generally. Miss Mary Burke desired a piano for the amusement of friend", and Mr Worms undertook to procure one at terms of Mcs«ra Hoffmann, music-sellers. Miss Burke paid the instalments regularly, but Mr Worms, according to evidence, altered the receipts, making them less than those which Miss Burke had paid to him on accouut. It was proved that Worms had only paid to Messrs Holl'man the sum of -G 10s, while he had received from Miss Burke several sums amounting to JCIG 16s. The prisoner was fully committed for trial on the three charges, but admitted to bail, himself in £200, aud two sureties in £100 each.

A salo of unredeemed pledges will take place on Monday next at Mr Grant's. Thcie are a large lot ot goods to be disposed of this time.

A service of song " Eva," will be given on Monday evening next, in the Franklin Road Primitive Methodist church, commencing at 7.30 p m.
