The Cambridge Races.
(BY TELEGRAPH.)
CAMBRIDGE, this day. The Cavalry Races and Jockey Club Spring Meeting is proving a very successful affair. The attendance is much, larger than was expected.
The first race was between two swampers for £10 a side, Corcoran's The Saint beating Montague's The Wren. The Maiden Plate brought out eight horses, McCabe's Sweetbriar and Brunsleu's Matlock led past the stand, Garland's Emu being in the rear until half round the course, when he came through his horses with a rush, and after allowing Sweetbriar, the second horse, to change position occasionally.with him he came past the post an easy winner. ■ The Handicap Hurdle Race brought out six horses, viz,, Gladstone, The Arrow, Spring, Little Whitefoot, Waverley, and Kaiwake. The iirst hurdle caused The Arrow to baulk, Waverley, Gladstone, and Kaiwake jumping in fine style. Gladstone ran strong and jumped well; He was hard pressed by Coleman's Kaiwake, but unfortunately the latter baulked at the fifth hurdle and lost his chance. Patterson's Gladstone cape in first, and Kaiwake second, with Tho Arrow a good third, in spite of his misbehaviour at the start.
Messrs Allom and Parr, as starters, have thus far got their horses away very successfully. Colonel Lyon is judge in place of Robert Fergusson. , ,-,; ~, The Cambridge brass baud are all performing in fine style, under the direction of Mr Mackintosh. Host Raynes is giving great . satisfaction as the first caterer in the new Grand Stand. Cavalry Cup. Wilkinson's Orakaa 1 Garland's Emu 2 Five started. Tradesmen's Plate. Dnulop's Magician 1 Tui 3 Four started.
