POLICE COURT.-This Day.
(Before Messrs Cosgrave and Prime, Justices of the Peace.) DRUNKEHNKSS. Maria Lysaght was ordered to pay 10s, and Wm. Garside was ordered to prison for seven days. LARCENY OF BEGISTERED LETTER. Wm. Laird, charged with the larceny of a registered post letter, the property of Samuel Isaacs, on the 57th August, was remanded until Monday next. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. George Saunders was committed to prison for seven days for being absent without leave from the schooner Sissy ou the 27th inst. PARENTAL NEGLECT. Stephen Litt did not appear on a charge of neglecting to contribute towards the support of his children in the Industrial School. The Bench ordered a warrant to issue for Lilt's apprehension. HOW HE LOST HIS MONEY. Catherine 'iaylor was charged with the larceny of a purse, containing tho sum of £23 iv notes, from the person of Thomas Connolly, on the 22nd of August. Thomas Connolly deposed that he was a labourer, working at Whangaeri. Ho came up to Auckland on a little business. Met the prisoner on the day in question. Went home with her to Chancery Lane for a cup of tea, by invitation. There were three other women in the house, who appeared under the influence of drink. They wanted him to shout. He gave them 2s Gd. Pelt weary, and went to bed. Was pretty certain that.hc'had three £5 notes in his purse. Remembered prisoner sitting on the bed. Woke up about two hours after, and found that prisoner and his purse had departed from the room. He reported his loss to Serjeant-Major Mason, who accompanied him in search of the women. Found them drinking iv the Newmarket [Hotel. Prisoner said: Why Hd you not come yourself, and I would have given you the money. Letitia Hughes deposed that she was iv the house. Prisoner had no money before Conuolly called. Mrs Jenkins, wife of John Jenkins, Newmarket, deposed to prisoners calling at the store and purchasing a general outfit of clothing, amounting to £6 9s. Gave the difference of two £5 notes. Eliza Robinson, domestic servant at the Newmarket Hotel, deposed that when Ser-geant-Major Mason came prisoner went to the door and threw away a purse (produced.) Michael Sheehan, lodgmg-house-keeper of Chancery Lane, deposed to prisoner's lodging at his house. She had no money. The City Missionary paid for her lodgings. Detective Strathem found the missing purse, which prosecutor identified as his property. This being the evidence, the prisoner was committed for trial. VAGRANCY. Catherine Clarice, otherwise Naughton, was committed to prison for three months with hard labour for using obscene language and being the occupier of a house frequented by thieves and prostitutes. -
