OCEAN RACE.
THS JIAZEPPA AND OVALAU.
WHEN it became known tha*. the schooners Mazeppa and Ovalau, both of which arrived in harbouronTuesday.hadleft Auckland the same day, considerable interest was manifested as to which had made the best run. We believe also that considerable money has oeen laid in Auckland upon the result. For the benefit of those who are interested we have made the following extracts from each ship's log :.—Mazeppa—Got under way at 9 a.m. ; passed Cape Colville at 1 p.m.; off Great Barrier at 2.15 p.m; arrived in harbour at 9.30 a.m. Ovalau —Got under way at 11.30 a.m. ; off Cape Colville at 5 p.m.; passed Cuvier Island at S p.m. — Samoan Times, August 10th. In explanation of the above, we may state that the Mazeppa dropped down to Rangitoto on the night previous to starting, and "was close to the reef when she got underweigh next morning. The Ovalau, on the contrary, sailed from anchorage off the Railway Wharf direct. From a private letter received to-day from Samoa, we learn that the Mazeppa arrived three hours before the Ovalau, and the latter vessel therefore claim3'the race. There is no doubt that the Mazeppa was in better sailing trim than the Ovalau, as she had only a moderate cargo of merchandize on board, while the Ovalau was deeply laden with coal. The Coronet made the run down in sixteen days.
