Evening Star Office, Monday.

In reference to business, so far as Auckland is concerned, we are enabled to show a tolerably fair balance-sheet. The vessels expected are—the Minister of Marine, 164S tons, sailed March 26. The Langstone, 746 tons, sailed March 31. The Kildonan, 650 tons, sailed April 30. The Ironside, 87S tons, sailed the same date. In sequence, we will give the imports. In reference to beer, there are some 1600 cases oa the way. but they will arrive at a seasonable time. The quotations are the same as by last mail. Corn sacks will not be required for months, but Calcutta's are expected, and we quote 8s 6d to 9s 6d ; wool packs, 3s 6d to 3s 9d. Cement is held by one firm, and there is none of any amount coming forward. Price nominal. Slates.—Only 40 tons expected, and prices likely to remain Ikm. Candles, Price's Belmonts, have been sold at 9. T d, d.p., other brands at Bd, Ibe expected arrivals will not cover one month's demand.

Dried fruits show no advance in prices. Fish: Last sales of salmon were at 7s 9d. Sardines are scarce, and the expected arrivals are not sullicicut to face the demand.

Metals : Latest sales of Con-gated galvanised iron have been made at £21 10s; fencing wire £14. The last four ships named bring only .30 tous galvanised iron, fencing wire 70 tons. We may just as well state that the ships named bring 133 empty tanks, 14 tons auchors and chains, £7570 hardware, 131 tons bar iron, -15 tons hoop iron, 14 tons sheet iron. 46 tons plate iron, and 40 tons pig iron ; pig lead, 5 tons; yellow metal, 3 tons ; tin plates, 290 boxes ; iron nails, 70 tons; steel do. 9 tons. Since writing, the Langstone has arrived. The rainfall during the last two months has been greater than for many years past, and has interfered with agricultural and other pursuits. European and Australian advices tend to enhance the value of llonr and wheat. At present the mills with one exception have not advanced their prices, and we quote £13 10s for silk-dressed ; household, £11 10s; Southern brands, £10 to £12 ; Adelaide, £14 to £14 10s. Horse feed is completely overstocked, and prices of oats are simply nominal. The California- maize realscd 3s 4Ad ; ditto Cape barley, 2s Sd to 3s

Gum (kauri), ordinary quality, £32 to £34. The barque Thames sailed for New York with 372 ton 3, on the 14th July. In oils wc quote : Linseed (raw), in wood, 3s Gd to 3s Od ; in drums, 3s 9d to 4s ; colza, 4s sd, in wood, 4s lOd in drums, drums included ; castor oil, 4s 3d; kerosene. Is Gd to Is 9d. The ships named bring 1,521 gallons linseed oil, 656 gallons rape oil. Malt: Really prime English is worth lis 9d ; tanks, £4, extra. Color, ial has heen received of inferior quality ; we quote 9s. Hops: Really line qualities are out of stock, and those offering vary in price according to quality, from lid to Li 7d. 2SS quarters of malt and 27 pockets of hops arc about due. Jams are worth from 6s 3d to 7s, and fully stocked. 370 cwt currants are afloat. Sugars : The latest advices from the Mauritius announce a rise in prices, with decreased stocks available for export This newsi will have the effect of improving the present low quotations, which declined recently from one to two pounds per ton. In spirits nothing has been done. In brandies Hennessy's bulk brandy would com. mand 9s 6d to 10s ; case ditto, 34s ; other brandies vary from 5s Gd to Ss for bulk, and 183 to 28 for case. Geneva JDKZ, as also " Old Tom," are very scarce, and are worth more money. 2,723 gallons bulk brandy, 2,154 gallons case brandy, 4,063 gallons mm, 2,480 gallons Geneva, and 3,134 gallons British spirits are expected. Teas, new season's, which are reported of excellent quality, are expected next week, to be followed by a shipment of Assams, will be reported on when in the market. In timber the demand has fallen off, in consequence oi the state of the money market, aud the cessation of building operations in the other provinces. Tobaccos are fully stocked, especially with inferior and unsaleable qualities. The demand still continues for Venus, for which we quote f, to 1/5. Salt is worth £4 10s for coarse, and £5 for fitie, and none expected.' Mr R. C. Greenwood's land and property sale to-day was well attended. The freehold allotment and two cottages in Bathstrect, Parncll, brought £175. Purchaser, Mrs Decry ; 160 acres of bush land by the Wairoa River, 5s Gd per acre, Mr Walker. The general goods realised fair prices. American hams, cloth, o£d to 7d; tubs, IGsfper nest; clocks, 15s to £2.
