THE FEELING IN THE WAIKATO,

MEETING AT HAMILTON. HAMILTON, Saturday. A public meeting convened by the Mayor was held here this afternoon in order to secure the prosecution of the line of railway to the Thames. Mr Albert Potter proposed, and Mr I. It. Vialou seconded, " That the prosecution of the Thames and Waikato Railway during the past year has been in accordance with the Kailwaj Construction Act, 18.8, and is the same line for which the inhabitants of the Thames, Piako, and AVaikato asked for Legislative power to construct by special bills under the above-mentioned Act, and that this meeting cordially thank the Government {or the works done and in progress, and urges the speedy completion of the. line." Mr J. K. Macdonald proposed as an amendment, aud Mr Hammond seconded " That this meeting, recognising the importance of the speedy completion of the Waikato-Thames Valley Railway line, Laving its termini in the Boroughs of Hamilton and Thames, both from astategical aud commercial point of view, would urge upon the Government the immediate construction of the line as far as it is surveyed, and contract plans are prepared, as labour can now be obtained at a low rate, from the number ot unemployed at present in the colony, thereby enabling contractors to undertake the works at a much lower rate than they are likely to do during the summer months.

Eighteen persons voted for the amendment, and seven for the motion, The former was accordingly declared carried.

Mr Jamieson proposed, Mr. Lovegrove seconded, and it was carried, "That the Government be requested to call for tenders for the construction of the first fifteen miles of the Thames-Waikato railway, from the Hamilton end at the Waikato River, at once."

. The meeting terminated after deciding that copies of the foregoing resolutions should be forwarded to the local members and to the Government.
