DUNEDIN, Saturday.
TheArawata left yesterday morning for the Bluff. At the city Police Court four men charged with riotous conduct on New Year's morning were fined in sums varying from 3s to ss. DUNEDIN, this day. Harper's estate in South Canterbury, containing 9,500 acres, was purchased on Saturday by Mr Henry Driver. The price has not transpired, but it is said to be much lower than any land in the same locality sold a short time ago. CRIMINAL SESSIONS. The Criminal Sittings began this morning. The Judge's charge merel j referred to cases. In the case of James Miller, charged with fraudulently obtaining goods, Hi 3 Honor directed the jury to find a verdict of not guilty, a s the goods weie obtained a few minutes after he had failed, while the Act provided for within four months before a declaration of insolvency. James Morgan pleaded guilty to forgery, and sentence was deferred. j^The Grand Jury returned true bills in all cases except John Johnston and Thomas McNaughton, for robbery. William White, charged with forgery^ at Dunedin, was acquitted. Ib consequence of Mr Ward's resignation Mr Gordon, deputy, is appointed Registrar. T. L. Shepherd is appointed clerk of Court at Naseby, Bremner being transferred to a clerkship in the Supreme Court here. A mau named McMillan, released from gaol on Saturday, died shortly afterwards.
