THE local authorities of Coromandel are, we understand, taking some steps to secure, if risible a irant from the Colonial Treasury Sds' goldfields works. The Tokatea tramway, constructed at great cost, is falling into decay, and the high way boards find their small revenues quite inadequate to the maintenance of the important lines of road formerly kept in order by the Provincial Government, but now thrown upon the limited ratable properties on the goldfield. The misfortune of Coromandel is the want of a few of those inveterate "deputationizers" who flourish so abundantly in the sister district of the Hauraki; and its modest virtue has hitherto been its sole reward. Will no local Brodie arise to champion the just cause, and strike fr »ror into the Ministerial bosom ? We reeemmend the county and highway chairren to study the story of the widow and the unjust judge. There is a good deal of sound philosophy and worldly wisdom m the tactics adopted by the forlorn one which is applicable to nineteenth century times and administrators of colonial funds. A richer mining district than Coromandel there is not in New Zealand. It is, moreover, the parent of New Zealand goldfields —the place where the precious metal, which has contributed so much to the growth and prosperity of the colony was first discovered : yet in the apportionment of the munificent grants voted from time to time for goldfield purposes by the Colonial Parliament, this district has been systematically and shamefully overlooked.
