The principal evidence against Jessop was a letter found on McDoriough on his arrest.

A sad, accident occurred on Rimatuka last night A waggon, with five horses, driven by William Stephens, went over the bad corner known as Drake's Elbow. The driver and two horses were killed. It was dark at the time of the accident. Deceased was quite a young man. .
