We understand that Mr R. T. Wheeler, the proprietor of a local private trade circular published in Dunedin, under the ridiculously pretentious title of " The Mercantile Gazette of New Zealand"—a title which mb-it be assumed with quite as much reason by .he " Church Chronicle/ or the " New Zealand Wesieyan"- is now in Wellington canvassing for signatures to the preposterous petition on which Aye. already have animadverted. This petition prays that the Debtor and Creditors Act may be amended; by requiring all bankruptcy notices to" be advertised compulsorily in the so-called "-.Mercantile Gazette .of -.New .Zealand. We feel sure that Wellington merchants and tradesmen are; too acute to allow themselves to be befooled into signing-;his absurd peti-: tion, but it is as well that they should be on their guard. It is amusing to see that the < " Timaru Herald" has become embued with the conviction thr.t the ..proposal is.-._■ due ■ [eminently calculated to benefit .he-interests > of the human race, and in a, leading article discourses with a simple and touching faith on the blessings which might be expected to flow from compelling every bankrupt estate to pay black mail to a private gentlemanliving in Dunedin. But we confess our inabiility to endorse this view.—"Wellington Pest." A A.. A London paper speaking of the _strong anti-Russian feeling in Armenia, which has since received such strong canfirmatidn by the Odessa riots, says : "A society has been formed called the Intikamijilar—'The Avengers? This is a secret society after ths model of the Assassins and the Old Man of the Mountain. It has been organised in Ei-iugian, although the originator of the, scheme is a Hodjiand Beg of Lasistau. The I object of this society is the extermination of the.Russians by assassination, and they, seem to have begun ther operations on a 'considerable scale. Two officers have been mmdered at Erzeroum.-i They were found swimming in their blood close by-Foijt Azizieh. Two days later another officer of the ICubau:regime-t, -and on May-14th two more, 'were shot at- and dangerously iwbuhded. the :15th,' Colette!!
