We seldom remember an Autumn Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club having created more interest or speculation than the present anniversary. Ever since the weights for the principal handicaps were declared, the sole topic of conversation in sporting circles has seemed to bo the fitness or non-fitness of this, that, or the other equine celebrity to win " the Easter" or "Steeple." From time to time, too, there has been a good deal of quiet betting, which increased during last week, and culminated on Saturday in really brisk wagering. For an hour or two, indeed, that home for speculators, the Occidental Hotel, was more like a small Tattersall's subscription room than anything ehe. So far as we could gather, Hippocampus was iv great favour for the Easter Handicap, whilst Gazelle was frequently enquired for in conjunction with the Hurdle Race. Don Juan was high in favour for the Steeplechase.
