REV. MR. CARRICK AND CANON FARRAR.
(To the Editor of the.EVENING STAR.) Sik,—l suppose we are to understand from Mr Carrick's letter in this mornings .. " Herald " that he, for one, is a believer in the eternity of future punishments. , I am no theologian, and so Avonld not ~,: attempt to argue with him whether such a g| belief is or is not repugnant to the teaching of the New Testament, but I would simply advise him to feel his way before he preacnes this doctrine in the Australian Colonies,, even to a Presbyterian congregation. As children, we were wont to listen to profound expositions on the "pains of neu forever;" but now-a-days few clergymen caie to discant on such ghastly themes. Moreover, not only have the thinking.. Christian laity of the nineteenth century -| abandoned the belief in the eternity °f future punishments, but, whilefew ministers, would dare to preach the doctrine, numbers of the more outspoken ones of eY£ r J Protestant denomination frankly aver-tnai . 1; it no longer forms or indeed can form a : pt"u. of their creed.—Yours, truly, A SCOTCHMAN. Auckland, March 29th, 1878.,
