POLICE COURT.—This Day.
(Before J. Willcox and J. Newman, Esqs., Justices.)
LARCENY.
John McDougall, a respectable man who has long borne a high character, was charged with stealing a quantity of linen, value £1, the property of Jno. Goodman. Mr Tyler, who appeared for the defendant said the bundle had been picked up, and not stolen. He would prove that there was no felony if the Bench would grant a remand till Monday. The case was consequently remanded to Monday, and McDougall was admitted to bail, himself in £20, and two sureties of £10 each. AN OLD GRUDGE. Jno. Eoreman, a young sailor, was charged with assaulting Henry Gamer, cook on board the Chasca. The prosecutor declined to appear, and as Mr Pardy said he had no wish to press the case, Foreman was dismissed with a caution.

Alex Whisker was charged with using provoking and offensive language to Alicia Longauon, and putting her in fear of her life." Mr Tyler appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty.. ■ Alicia Longanon said that the defendant rented a blacksmith's shop from her. He would not pay her the rent, and used fearful language when she went for it, threatening to roast her boy, &c. She was in bodily fear of her life. Defendant said to her "you I'll have your life." In answer to Mr Tyler, Mrs Longanon admitted that there was a dispute between them about the premises, and also about the place where defendant got his beer. Rebecca Kobiuson said that she heard Whisker call Mrs Longanon dreadful names. Mr Tyler addressed the Court for the defendant, pointing out that the action was brought out of pure ill-feeling. Alexander Whisker said Mrs Longanou came and called him abusive names. There was a dispute between them about the premises, out of which the whole matter arose. She was never in any fear of him. He never said he would roast the boy. Edward Pierce, in the employ of Whisker, deposed that Mrs Longanon used most offensivelanguage to Whisker on Saturday night, calling him a scoundrel, drunkard, and many other names. Whisker did not use the language imputed to him in the indictment.
In answer to Mrs Longanon, Pierce said that he never abused her, neither did Whisker.
The case was dismissed.
