The Land Tax Bill introduced into the Assembly provides for the appointment of three Commissioners to act as a Court of Summary Jurisdiction, also for the appointment of classifiers. It was read a second time by a large majority. The Roman Catholics all over the country are petitioning against the Education Bill. Owing to a decision of the Supreme Court that appointments to Harbour Trust made by the Governor in Council are illegal, the whole of the past proceedings of the Board are invalidated, and require a special Act. Heavy rainfalls occurred \ at tiie end of last week, but ks still insufficient. The small pox patients will be released on Saturday. A fatal 'bus accident occurred. Tha s-prings broke, and tbe horses bolted. A barmaid named Sarah McEvoy was killed by jumping out. Creswick is drawing well at the Academy of Music.
Charles Pope, American actor, appeajß at the Royal shortly. Business is still dull, but is liksly to improve shortly. The rupture in Adelaide between Sir — Hayncs and the Council still continues, causing a complete dead-lock to legislation. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Henry Read, Town Clerk, of Warnambool, on a charge of embezzling the Building Society funds. It is believed he has gone home in the Whampoa. A box of five thousand sovereigns is missing from the mail steamer China, at Galle. They were shipped at Sydney last month.
