The half-yearly entertainment of the Pitt-street Wesleyan Young Men's Association, corn.es off on Monday evening next, at half-past seven, in the Pitt-street schoolroom. These gatherings, which only happen twice a year, arc nowa thing of history. The public are invited to an evening's pleasure, at the outlay of a shilling and are often astonished that it can be given at the price. But the secret is that no profit is sought. Many pounds are laid out for refreshments, and this generally pays, as the public respond. The programme* is varied and choice; and the tickets are being rapidly purchased. The long -programme appeals in Saturday's issue, The Wellington correspondent or the " Bay of Plenty Times" telegrapher : " The course pursued by Government in this case is exciting much unfavorable comment, and sympathy ■with Jones. Letters and telegrams expressive of sympathy are coining in from all quarters. Subscription lists are being started in Duuediu and Oamaru ; one enthusiastic admirer telegraphed him £10 as a contribution towards the cost vi Ids defence."

The humour of Dr. Wallis's speech on the Local Option Bill is thus referred to in the Lyttolton "Times" :—"Di: "Vfallis, it seems, is not always so dreary a talker as he has been described. When he rose to speak on the Local Option 35111 after the Hon W. Fox, there was a general clearing out of members, but afier the reverend gentleman had divested himself of his pulpit-like style of spenking he wanned up to the subject, and eventually became irresistibly funny in some of his remarks. Then members returned from the lobbies, and laughed heartily at the hon. gentleman's flights of fancy and dashes of humour. After stating that he would support a permissive but not a confisoatory measure, lie gave a happy illustration, as shewing how it would bo impossible to entirely prohibit the use of liquor. He instanced the tact of a man keeping an allopathic, homiepathic or hydropathic establishment. One patient would come and say that he hud a pain iv his stomach, and was generally out oi sorts. The doctor would immediately reply, "(Jin's your medicine, sir;" and that man would go away convinced that the doctor understood his patient's ailment.). Then another man would come with a wild look in his eye and a nervous twitching about the mouth. It would be easy to recognise an M. IT. 11. in him, with Financial Statement on the brain. That man required a glass o£ brandy and hot water. And so Uio hon. member proceeded, prescribing various remedies for dilleront maladies. He kept the House iv roars of laughter for about liftccii minutes,"
