A Lunatic Starves Himself to Death.

An" inquest was held this afternoon at the Whau Lunatic Asylum, before Dr Goldsbro' on the body of A. H. Finlay, who was tried at the October criminal court sittings, 1574, for attempting to murder the clerk of Mr • Young, butcher, of Grey-ssreet. The deceased was extremely eccentric in his habits and on the 4ffh August he declared he would take no more food. Dr Aicken consequently had to feed him with the stomach pump. He became gradually reduced until Thursday night at 12 o'clock, when hejdied. After hearing the evidence, tho jury returned a verdict " Died of inanition, caused by want of food," but no blame was attributable to the officers of the Asylum.

A telegram was to-day received from Sir George Grey congratulating the Auckland football players on the successful issue of their match with Canterbury. A telegram has been received from Sir K. Douglas stating that the Government were willing to erect immigrants'cottages if the district required immigrants, in which case it would be necessary for the chairman of the Highway Board to make application for the cottages. We believe steps have been taken in that direction. — Comet.
