The Government have received a telegram to the effect that the Mikado left San Francisco on the 29th February, a day before her due date. The Colima connects with her at Kandavu, and is due at Auckland tomorrow. The City of San Fraucisco arrived at San Francisco on the 9th instant. A petition was presented to the Resident Magistrate to-day, as to the possibility of procuring a mitigation of the sentence passed upon a man end woman for indecency in the Botanical Gardens. Mr Crawford recommended the application to be sent to the Executive. This was done, and the deputation went away after an interview with the Minister of Justice, with the assurance that an application in accordance with their wishes would at once be made, and that there was little doubt Dut that both prisoners would be practically released by Tuesday. Neither has as yet been subjected to the usual hard labour penalty accompanying such period ef imprisonment. This day. It is stated that a movement is afoot to request government to prevent civil servants whether architects or engineers from competing with those in private business.
