Accident.

A RUNAWAY HOI-ISF, CARRIES AWAY A TELEGRAPH POST A»D SMASHES TWO CABS.

An accideni of an extraordinary character occurred at tho foot of Wyndham-etroet today between one aud two o'clock. Mr Lavors' horse aud cart were standing at the door of his eccd store, the wheel of the cart being secured with a chain according to law, when something startled the horse and lie bounded oft down Wyndhnm-strcet, taking for hip route tho pavement by the Herald Office, Going down the steep hill the auirnal and burden acquired a great momentum, nnd dashing! at headlong speed past Sibbin's corner it went sm"sh into the Gas Company's telegraph post; at tho edge of the pavement. This was snapped short; off, and went bounding into tho middle of the roadi The runaway continning his mad. career, next encountered one of'Mr Quick's cabs standing at the sontheni end of the cab-stand. It camp full but against the astonishod horses' necks. Startled out of all propriety they made so rapid a wwcrve to tho left that they broke thn polo into splinters and severely damaged the panels and bottom by their mad plunging. They were ultimately quieted, but the cab prpscnted a sorry sight. This' seems to have sobered the refractory horse, and he came to a stnndstill and was secured. Meanwhile the effects of the acci-' dent were being experienced in a very curious manner. Some distance away, the telegraph wire which had been broken by the carrying r.way of the post, in ita fall became entangled with the heads of two horses about 20 yards further up the cab rank. These also commenced plunging, and for some time the efforts to disengage them from the electric wire, only served to increase their fury. They were not quieted till the Danel3 aud general framework of the cab had suffered severely. The astonishing part of the story if, that Mr Layer's horpe and cnirt pulled tip almost uninjured. A slight injury to the harness, was all that was sustained. ;
