Discovery of a Dead Body at Waiheki
The dead body of a man vas found on Wednesday last floating in Waiheke Channel, by a party out boating. Captain Williams, of H M. Customs, who was among the party, caused the body to be drifted on Waiheke Island. It was clothed in a tweed suit, with elastic side boots, and no socks. Was apparently the body of a stout man, aped about forty. On searching the pockets £2 6s Id was found, together -with a pocket-kuife and part of a.pipe, and the Eve ixg Star of the 14th inst. The decomposition of the body had so far set in that the features, were not recognizable. An inquest was held the next day, Mr Chas. Chamberlain aoting as coroner. An open verdict was returned by the jury. The body vas buric-d on the beach above hiah-w.iter mark. There was no timber to make a coffin, so the body had to be buried without one. It is conjectured that the corpse is that of the butcher who was drowned at the Thames a short time ago.
