The other day our contemporary the Cross \ published a most misleading return of the result of the general elections in the colony to the present time. In several instances members who were actually elected on the opposition ticket, as, for instance, Mr Larnach, were set down as Government supporters, and in all cases where candidates have gone in as independent members, the Government side has been credited by our contemporary with their votes. These perversions of fact in anything affecting the Government are so frequent and so well understood by the public that it is hardly worth while referring to them. The following telegram, however, which has been placed at our disposal by Mr. Mitchell, Secretary to Sir George Grey, will show conclusively how the elections have gone in Otago. From our Invercargill telegrams to-day it will be seen that Mr Cuthbertson, another thick and thin Government supporter has been defeased.

" Dunedin, 28th December, 1875, " To Sir George Grey, X.C.8.,

" Auckland, —

" I trust elections with you are going as well as with us. Had we only the right men every seat would be carried, such is the universal feeling throughout the province. As it is we shall have at least sixteen in one boat, and probably nineteen. "J. Macandrew."
