WELLINGTON.

(From our own Correspondent.) December 24.

The result of yesterday's election was owing entirely to the excellent organization of Messrs. Pearce and Hunter's party, and hard work on the part of the committee. Moorhouse's return for Chiistchurch has caused general satisfaction, with regret that he is not still Mayor of Wellington. A coach has just come through from Manawatu gorge, thus establishing communication for tho first time between the eastern and western divisions of Wellington province. ,

Tho annual performance of the " Messiah' by tne Choral Society last night was a great success. There were 150 performers and about 1000 persons persons present. The Election.

There was a big jollification last night by the victorious party at the result of the election. Everyone is very much pleased at the courteous way in which Travers conducted the contest, and he has risen a great deal in public estimation in consequence. A good many would like to see him started for Wairarapa agaiust another, but it is doubtful whether he will stand for any place t all he is so disgusted at his defeat. Young Fitzherbert, the son of the Superintendent, pleaded his maiden case this morning, and conducted it with considerable self-possession and average ability. There was a dense fog last night. The Arawata and another steamer started away from the wharf, but had to anchor inside the Heads.

The telegram boat Tue which usually crosses the strait in six hours was nineteen owing to the fog, the like of which has not been seen here for many years.

There was less display this Christmas amongst butchers and grocers in dressing their shops than has been the case for many

years. There is any quantity of cable here to mend ; several breaks and make up for weak places. It is said that about three hundred voters plumped for Travors. A great deal of inconvenience is felt from the break in cable. Owing to imperfect arrangements or toother causes, telegrams do not come to hand as punctually as ought to be expected, but a better state of things is expected by a day or two. . .
