ARRIVAL OF THE CITY OF MELBOURSE.

In the present muddled state of our Pacific mail service, one cannot be surprised at anything, and it wa3 therefore with perfectly undisturbed serenity that our citizens, on Sunday morning, saw the mail steamer, City of Melbourne, enter the harbour. She left Sydney on the 20lh inst. and had a moderate passage. Captain Brown informed us that the "City" was chartered by the New South Wales Government entirely independently of the Pacific mail Co 's agent, Mr H. H. Hall, who was unable to carry out the terms of the contract. She brought the Australian mail for England which ought to have beeo. taken by the Colima, and a large mail for Auckland. She was Eent via Auckland instead of via Kandavu. because the. Sydney people were under the impression that the Ivew Zealand Government had objected to the Cyphrenes taking away this month's mail. Upon hia arrival Captain Brown communicated with the postal authorities as to whether he should call at Kandavu or go straight on to San Francisco. He received instructions to call at Kandavu to take on tho mails and passengers of the Cyphrenes. The City of Melbourne left at one o'clock yesterday with a supplementary English mail from Auckland.
