NEWTON ELECTION. — UNOPPOSED RETURN OF MR SWANSON.

The nomination of a representative to serve in the New Parliament for the district of Newton took place to-day in the Newton Academy. A large number of persons assembled but the business passed, off very quietly. Col. Balneavis the Returning Officer conducted the proceedings. Having read the writ and the notice issued in pursuance thereof, the Returning Officer called upon the electors to nominate their candidates. Mr <Seo. Holdship proposed Mr Wm, Swanson there former member as a fit and pioper person to represent them in the General Hssembly.

Mr Maeefield seconded Mr Swanson's nomination. There being no other candidate proposed, tho Retjurning Officer declared elector Wm Swanson as the duly elected member for Newton.

The announcement was received with -peals of cheering. Mr Wm. Swanson, in coming forward to thank the electors for the honor they had done him in electing him again, said he would say a few words upon matters which had escaped him in his address made the other evening. He then touched in brief review the unequal incidence of taxation under the present system ; the monopoly of the great runs in the South Island ; the necessity that exists for reform in the Upper House ; the anomaly that the Civil Service .should rule the colony ; the advisableness of reducing the duration of Parliaments to three year 3 instead of five ; the Busby arbitration case ; the native land purchases, •with which the speaker disclaimed any con section ; the necessity for united action on tike part of the Auckland members, and other public topics. (We regret that owing to :great pressure on our space we are unable te give the speech at length.) On resuming his seat the newly elected member was loudly cheered.

A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer closed the proceedings.
