The nomination to-day represented in its results about the position we think which the two candidates for City East will hold at the close of polling day. It is a pity that Mr. Clark has not been withdrawn. It is not the position in which a man of his character should be placed, and we trust that he will not regard the result of the election, if he goes to the poll, as in any way significant of the estimation in which he is held by his fellow citizens. The feeling is too strong that Auckland must have a united phalanx under Sir George Grey, and it is not in human power to stem the torrent. Let it, however, be understood that the defeat of this day week is not the defeat of Mr James McCosh Clark, but a crushing defeat of a Government that beyond all its predecessors has been corrupt and demoralising, and hostile to our interests ; that it is the triumph, not of one of our citizens over another, but the triumph of popular rights over an oligarchical and centralising tyranny. By a friendly question timeously put, Mr Clark had an opportunity of disclaiming his being a Government candidate. But the fact of his rising from his seat in which he was supported on his right by Mr William Buckland and a prominent journalist of our respected acquaintance, with whom he had been in inter-communication during the whole pro. gress of the meeting, the fact that he rose from such position to answer the friendly question carried its own lesson to electors ; and it had the same unhappy effect on his disclaimer of all interest in the Members 1 Bribery Indemnity Bill. Mr Clark has been xinhappy in his bringing out and in his handing ; and for his own sake we are sorry. We think he ought to be withdrawn.
