Presence of Mind of a Little Soy at Mercer.
Yesterday (Sunday) evening an accident occurred at the wharf, Mercer, which but for the pluck and presence of mind of the little boy who was the Bubject of the accident, would doubtless have resulted in the loes of life. A child about eight or nine years of age (a son of one of the immigrants per British Empire, but whose name we have been unable to ? seer tain), was playing on the Waikato Steam Navigation Company's wharf in the evening, when he slipped over and fell into the river. The current runs very swift at this place, and a swimmer would have great difficulty in keep ing himself up. The boy in falling screamed out so loudly as to be heard by Constable Limmer who was near at the time. The current carried him quickly under the wharf, against one of piles, which he seized hold of and clang to with great tenacity for about ten minutes. Meanwhile the constable had procured a boat and put off to the boy's assistance, who was taken ashore not much the worse for his ducking. The brave little fellow deserves great credit for his coolness under such perilous circumstances.
