MELANCHOLY SUICIDE OF A YOUNG MARRIED WOMAN.
A YOUNG married woman at Maryborough, named Jorgensen, was employed by a firm in town as a tailoress. Fourteen months ago her husband left for Sydney, and since that time has neglected to correspond with his •wife. The landlady with whom the woman lodged dnriDg the greater part of this inteival, gave her an irreproachable character. On Monday afternoon she complained of feeliDg weak and sick, and left tbe shop with the intention, as she told her shopmates, of going to the postoffice for a home letter. We may iudge from the tragic sequel to the story, that the desired letter did not arrive, unless indeed the excuse was altogether fictitious. For the girl appears to have gone to Eome retired spot on the river bank, and ihere, alone, and unaided brought to life an infant. In an agony of despair, produced by the consciousness of her shame, she appears to have thrown her babe from her into the river, and then, awakening too late to the consequences, seems to have sought refuge from her sufferings in a similar death herself. The dead mother and baby have been found floating down the river with the tide, and both will now rest in one grave. A witness, in giving evidence, unconsciously told the cause of double murder—" She had no friends in the colony."
