We understand that there is a chance of the destination of the flrip Lutterworth being altered at the last moment from Newcastle to Lyttelton. She is still at the X orth Head, and will await the result of the fresh nf gotiations.

The sailors in port seem to be on the rampage just now. Ihere was a lively row on Saturday night, and about three o'clock today some of them commenced fighting in the vicinity of the Post-office, smashing some window glass. They were wise enough, however, to sheer off before the police arrived.

A most important' debate will take place to-night among the members of St. James Association viz. " Should Mechanics Institutes or Museums be opened on Sunday ?" This is one of the leading questions of the day and has or will occup} the attention and consideration of every thinking member of our community, for we cannot attach too much importance to a subject whose issue would in either case be attended with such beneficial or deterimental results, and to many orthodox thinkers would appear a public breaking of the 4th commandment. We are certain however that the subject will receive a clear and impartial investigation by the members, and trust that the elements may be favourable for their meeting.

The Union Beach jumping case turns out to be a mere fiasco. The part pegged off is merely the foreshore below high water mark, which was leased by the Company from the natives. The title to the foreshore has, been a bone of contention at the Thames, and is still unsettled ; but the Union Beach has as good a title to the foreshore which forms the frontage to their mine, as it is possible to get in the present state of the law. The mine workings, are in no way affected by the foolish pegging-off which has been indulged in by Macgregor, the Cross correspondent and old Jaspar the waterman. The shaft is a considerable distance from the shore, and the §rich reef runs into the hill, and not towards the shore. Whether the foreshore would ever have been worked is problematical, and the case is more one of trespass than of jumping, if there is anything in it at all.

On view in the window of Mr Isidor Alexander, jeweller, of Queen-street, may be -seen two valuable English gold hunting watches, which are intended as presentations to Messrs Cole and Combes on Thursday next by the members of the Good Intent Lodge of Oddfellows. The inscriptions on each indicate that they are to be presented to these two gentlemen in recognition of their valuable gratuitous services as treasurer and trustee respectively for periods of twelve and nine years.
