WELLINGTON.
WELLI NGTON.
This day.
Mr. Vogel and Mr. Thomas Russell
The Post last night had a rasping article on the way Mr Russell was sent home, and Mr Vogel went home, <md publishes Mr Voxel's letter of instructions to Mr Russell. It says: " When the above letter was ■written, Parliament was sitting. On the 31st of August, the last day of the session, the Premier informed the Bouse he had arranged with Mr Thomas Rusaell to proceed to Sydney (with a view to making wrangements with rh.e N S.W. Government for carrying on the San Franoisoo Mail Service) ; not a word was hiuted as to the probable necessity stat^u in Mr Vogel's letter three -ays previously that Mr Kuesell ehould also go to England, and not a single word was said to lead the house to understand that Mr Russell had been authorised by the Government; to arrange a contract on terms which it had not sanctioned, and varying greatly from those it had sanctioned, and not a word was said of Mr "Vogel's own intention of proceeding to both Sydney and England, although Mr Kusself was informed of the fact. Let it also be remembered that this intention when affirmed in these columns, had been officially contradicted in" the Government organs. Why did not Vogel read to the House the 'sstructions contained in the above letter ? Had he done so the probability is that the House would not have sanctioned the transaction. A more flagrant case of deception we never met with. Mr Vogel and his colleagues -vare evidently afraid to trust the House. They Kent .Russell off to nogotiate a contract whioh they probably knew would not. Tbe approved oi by the House, and ttusted to their power this session to carry the matter through. The whole transaction, which :,t vroiild hardly be an abuse of language to call a conspiracy, is exceedingly discreditable to alj concerned in it.
