MELBOURNE.
April 10. Yesterday morning an extensive fire occurred at the the works of the Victoria Sugar Company, Sandridge. The water supply being defective, the best pait was pretty Eoon destroyed. The loss is estimated at between£2o,ooo and £40,000, of which £20,550 is covered by insurance. Nearly all the companies are concerned : New Zealand, JcloOO ; and National of New Zealand, £1000. Nearly 200 persona are thrown "out of employment. It will be some months before operations can be returned. The fire broke out of the top storey of the sugarhouae. The origin of the fire is unknown. 3,500 persona attended the Rev. Charles Clark's lee Cure on the "Tower of London" in the Tower Hall. It is estimated that up« wards of eight thouand attended various places of amusement that evening. BreadstufFa are very quiet, "Wheat, 4s. lid to sd. ; Maurtiua sugar has advanced from 10s. to 155.; oats, 4a. to 4s. Id. for milling. Arrived at Newcastle: 6th, Tien Tsien, from Auckland. A meeting of Bishops will be held at Melbourne on the 4th July, for the election of a Bishop of Brisbane. The Frowning Beauty, from Newcastle for Auckland, put into Sydney leaky. The steamer Duke of Edinburgh, leaving Newcastle, broke down, and narrowly escaped going ashore. MELBOUBNE. SHiPPißra—Arrived : Atlantic, from Hokianga. ADELAIDE. The Government has resolved to pursue a vigorous policy, and on the meeting of Parliament will submit several important measures. A league has been formed in favour of free secular compulsory education.
