Cricketing Averages. In the cricketing averages just published by the Cricket Club, Corfe heads the list of batsmen, with 355 for seven first - class matches; the next being J. Fowler, 229 for 10 matches. J. Sweet heads the list of bowlers with an average of 6.30 runs per wicket in 17 matches ; Fuller coming n e xt with 8.21 runs per wicket in 15 matches. Bodies washed Ashore. It is supposed that the bodies and pieces i of wreck found near Long Beach, on iSinetymile Beach, are from the missing vessel Success, of Auckland, which had to run from Timaru roadstead, during the gale on Saturday, June 5. Silver Mine. It is reported that a man Hamed Tidell haa found a siver mine on the ranges near Westport. Stopping Funeral. The funeral of the late Captain Charlesworth, yesterday, was stopped by the police, on the ground that an inquest must be held, as death resulted from an accident. The friends of deceased are greatly aggravated at this, as Dr Frank bad given a certificate that death was caused by erysipelas. This day. Canterbury College. The question for a vote for Canterbury College was again brought up last night, and after an acrimonious discussion a grant of £7000 was carried by 18 to 11 ; even then it was saddled with the condition that it should be first shown that a normal school was unsuitable for the purposes of a college. Girl Graduates. The list of successful candidates for Provincial Scholarships appears the names of two girls. The experiment is considered a success. ' City Valuation. The Resident Magistrate occupied from eleven o'clock till six yesterday, hearing objections against the city rate, but the assessor has succeeded in fixing such a valuation that 500 objections are lodged.
